For this bi-weekly series of 6-10 minute animated demonstrations of yoga sequences, I developed a character, environment and combined post-processing techniques for a painterly look. The nature of yoga really pushes what’s possible with a standard character animation rig, as extreme bends and hyperextensions of limbs can often result in undesirable deformations of the meshes. Often, it’s not apparent in advance what the problems will be, so the model sometimes needs to be adjusted as sequences are animated. The animations are keyframed by hand based on reference video – motion capture won’t work well as the model needs to turn around and twist in many ways, often overlapping limbs and joints. For quick turnaround, the videos are hardware-rendered.
